Emma's Top 3 College Tips

  • Life Hack: Listening to calming music such as jazz or instrumental music keeps the mind calm and helps to be more productive.
  • Free Things to do in Lexington: Go to the Arboretum and take a nature walk. Every section of the public nature park is designed to represent a different section of Kentucky's agriculture and landscape.
  • Study Spots: The comfy chairs and bean bags in the calm/meditation room.

What's been your favorite course and why?

My favorite course thus far has been the fashion show course that is offered in the Merchandising, Apparel, and Textiles department. The group of students in the class create a fashion show each year that showcases local businesses and Kentucky entrepreneurs. The show includes a silent auction as well with donated items from small business in Lexington. The proceeds made from the show are donated to study abroad scholarships within the College of Agriculture.

What advice would you offer an incoming freshman in the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment?

For the incoming freshman, my advice is to be involved in as much as possible while on campus. Your college experience will only be what you put into it and how you cultivate your time at the University of Kentucky. Utilize it and have fun and learn as much as possible within your time here.

Considering all you have learned in your area of study, is there a common misconception or something you wish everyone knew about the subject?

Being a fashion merchandising student I have learned that there is more to my major than just clothes. The misconception about my major is that it is superficial and centered around fashion design only. When in reality, fashion merchandising is about visual displays, retail mathematics, and the textile industry. In Erikson Hall we have a textiles lab that does testing and outsourcing for different companies such as Nike and appliance companies.
