Why did you choose your program, and how does your program contribute to your career goals?

I chose my program because I fell in love with how food and exercise made me feel. I knew that I wanted to explore more about how much food impacts your health and that is when I found human nutrition! Since I am on the pre-medicine track, I knew that I had to choose a major that would set me up perfectly for medical school and beyond. Human nutrition was the perfect fit for me because it allowed me to take all of the core classes that I needed, while also learning more about how important nutrition is for your health. I was able to take some amazing classes, that I would not have taken if I was in any other major. I took a cooking class, nutritional biochemistry, a nutrition-based seminar class and so many more! This major has truly prepared me to become the best physician I can be!

Have you completed an internship, job, or been involved with a club that has been especially meaningful to you?

I have done a lot at the University of Kentucky over the past 4 years. I was fortunate to get a job at U.K. Albert B. Chandler Hospital as a patient transporter during my sophomore year. As a patient transporter, I am responsible for the safe transport of patients around the hospital. This can be anything from taking them to a room, an MRI and CT scan, to the parking garage, and more. Through this job, I was able to grow and see so much that I never thought I could as an undergraduate. I was able to learn more about how to care for a patient and how to effectively communicate with other healthcare professionals. Additionally, I was able to learn more about how a hospital runs and just how much it takes to care for a patient in the best way possible.

What's been your favorite course and why?

My favorite course was nutritional biochemistry. I know "biochemistry" can seem daunting and a little scary, but this class was so interesting and changed the way I studied and how I was as a student. As this class was intense content-wise, I found myself wanting to study hard for our exams because it was so fascinating. I was able to learn all about the metabolic pathways of the body and how food fuels our bodies. My favorite was learning all about glycolysis (the breakdown of glucose into energy) and just how important it is for our survival!

What advice would you offer an incoming freshman in the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment?
My advice would be to get as involved as you can! Ever since I was a freshman, I became super involved in so many different clubs, organizations, and experiences. When I look back at my college experience, it would not have been the same if I had not stepped out of my comfort zone and joined as many things as I did! College is truly what you choose to make of it and becoming involved in a lot of different things will make your 4 years the very best. I have been able to make so many friends, and core memories and turn Lexington into a home for me. Coming from out of state, I was very nervous about making friends and joining clubs, but now I am so confident in myself and I have such a strong network of friends that I now call family here!
