Why did you choose your program, and how does your program contribute to your career goals?

All throughout high school, I was heavily involved with Future Farmers of America organization, however, I never met or saw anyone who looked like me doing what I grew to love! Thus, setting the path of wanting to become an agricultural educator. I believe that representation is everything! If you don't see yourself, outside of yourself, you feel invisible. I want my future students to know that no matter who they are or what they look like they always have a seat at the table. I also believe in the power of education and the impact it leaves on youth. UK's College of Agriculture, Food, & Environment fosters this ideal and the agricultural education program has given me the tools and resources needed for my goal to come to fruition.

What's been your favorite course and why?

AEN 252- Fabrication and Construction for Tech Systems (Welding)! As a part of the agricultural education program, students are required to take various classes ranging from different topics from animal sciences to agricultural economics to agricultural engineering. This prepares us to teach a wide range of subjects to our students -- in and outside the classroom! Welding was a course I was nervous to take, however, ending up loving it! It challenged me and exposed me to a different side of experimental learning that I had never done before. Not only did I learn to weld effectively, I learned to experience fun out of my comfort zone. Shoutout to AEN 252 professor, Donnie Stamper!

Considering all you have learned in your area of study, is there a common misconception or something you wish everyone knew about the subject?

Oftentimes when individuals hear the word "education", they think of a 4-walled classroom. However, agricultural education fosters boundless classrooms and offers limitless learning. Whether it be on a sales floor, board room, or a field; agricultural educators have the ability to meet students no matter their age or where they are, which I think is super cool!

Tell us about your favorite professor, advisor, or other member of the UK family that has been especially impactful during your college career? What makes them so special? How have they impacted your time here?

A group of students actually! The past and present graduate students of the agricultural education department have offered me mentorship, guidance, support, love, and laughs! As a Hispanic first-generation college student, they have provided me with a sense of belonging within my major. I sometimes get imposter syndrome when I think about my time here at the University of Kentucky. Nonetheless, they cheer me on and remind me that there is a place for me within these walls, I deserve to be here, and that my contributions are beneficial and worthy. For that, I will always be grateful for all of them.

Have you completed an internship, job, or been involved with a club that has been especially meaningful to you?

I have had the opportunity to work for the National Association of Agricultural Educators as a Student Intern since 2021. During this internship, I have met countless influential educators from across the United States, assisted with the execution of professional development workshops, traveled outside of the state, and seen the impact that agricultural education has on youth in more ways than one. Additionally, I have recently joined MANRRS (Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences), and I have been able to connect with like-minded individuals that are so passionate and driven to foster a space that prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion. Just another reflection on how representation is so important. The work that this organization does is unmatched and is so important to me.

What advice would you offer an incoming freshman in the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment?
