Why did you choose your program, and how does your program contribute to your career goals?
Throughout high school and even after I enjoyed my involvement in the agriculture education courses and FFA events I participated in. This space allowed me to find my voice, passions, and valuable friendships all while developing myself as a leader and individual. Knowing the impact this profession has had on myself motivated and encouraged me to choose to teach agriculture. During my time at the University of Kentucky, my program has continued to expand on these values and I hope that I can put my best foot forward in doing the same for future students. This program and profession makes a positive difference in the lives of young people and I hope to do the same.
Is there a common misconception about your major that you wish everyone knew about?
One common misconception about the career and technical education (agriculture education) major is that we all want to be teachers. While this is the focus and hopes of many students within the program, some of my peers go into the major with ambitions of being extension agents, professionals in agricultural sales, and a handful of other careers. This major is very flexible and is honestly one of the many befits to being invested in this major as you are exposed to many opportunities and outlets to use the skills, knowledge, and strategies learned throughout your time at UK!
What advice would you offer an incoming freshman in the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment?
As a first generation college student I didn't quite know what to expect my first few days on campus. However, I can honestly say making a genuine effort to immerse myself into the community and family atmosphere here at MG-CAFE made all the difference! If you are an incoming freshman, I would encourage you to go try something new, go to an informational meeting, or even go on the trip with a student organization! These unexpected experiences have the potential to lead to life-long friendships and even impactful mentorships! Now is the time to create your future and you get to choose it! Let your time at UK be an opportunity to grow your community and develop yourself as an individual!
Leslie's Top Three Sunday Brunch Locations
One thing that my roommates and I have been doing since my freshman year is Sunday brunch! This tradition has lead to lots of great conversations and even better food! My top three brunch spots in Lexington are:
- Josies - Josies has the best waffles.
- Biscuit Belly - Biscuit Belly need I say more, has some of the best biscuits and flavor combinations around.
- Doodles - Doodles is a really cool spot, with a Louisiana influence their breakfast is hard to beat! If you go, make sure to try their beignet basket!
