Why did you choose your program, and how does your program contribute to your career goals?

I knew coming into college that I did not wish to attend Veterinary School but still wanted to have an Animal Science degree. I chose to attend UK based on the Animal Science program that is offered here. The different pathways available in the Animal Science major make it easy to personalize to what you would like to do. I found that being on the production pathway and adding a minor in Agriculture Economics would help me to succeed in the field of my choosing. The Animal Science major at UK is largely hands on, so it has allowed me to learn and grow in my knowledge of livestock and the agriculture industry.

What's been your favorite course and why?

My favorite course so far has been ASC 102. While most define the class as difficult, I would define it as refreshing and challenging. It was the first course of my college experience to truly challenge my knowledge of the livestock industry. It mainly focused on production of various species of livestock, and I learned and retained more from that class than any other so far. ASC 102 was the first class I had to truly study for, and I am very grateful to have taken it, no matter how challenging it seemed at the time.

Considering everything you have learned in your study area, is there something you wish everyone knew about the subject?

Most people tend to believe that if you major in Animal Science then you must automatically become a Veterinarian. However, that is entirely incorrect. Animal Science is just as flexible as any other major in the College of Ag in terms of career opportunities. This major gives you a solid background in both science and business, allowing students to get the most of both aspects of the livestock industry. I truly enjoy the real world applications of my business classes combined with understanding the physiology of an animal and how they operate.

Tell us about the city of Lexington. Did anything surprise you? What places do you enjoy the most?

The city of Lexington is another reason that I decided to attend UK for college. Lexington is a rare combination of safe and busy, while also boasting its agricultural roots. Lexington is a very safe college city and has lots to offer within walking distance of campus, as well as an amazing downtown to explore. With Rupp Arena in the middle of Lexington, there is never a shortage of events going on such as concerts, basketball games, volleyball games, and much more! However, my favorite part of the city is how close it is to the rolling hills of pasture. Not far outside of Lexington is Keeneland and the Kentucky Castle, both landmarks and destinations that should be visited at least once (maybe three times) before your first year is completed.
