Why did you choose your program, and how does your program contribute to your career goals?

I originally selected the ABT Program because of the smaller class sizes and the wide variety of career opportunities. However, I stayed in the program because of the people! Next year, I hope to attend veterinary school. The courses I've taken through the ABT Program have better prepared me for the rigor of professional school. More importantly, I met many of my great friends and mentors through this program!

Ginny's Top 3 Study Tips

  1. Separate where you do work and where you relax. You will have a healthier mindset and will be much more productive if you aren't trying to study while sitting on the couch watching the game.
  2. Don't fall behind. Learning the content as it's taught makes studying so much easier when exam time rolls around.
  3. Ask for help! There are so many resources to help you - professors, tutoring services, and your peers.

What advice would you offer an incoming freshman in the UK Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment?

Embrace every moment. There is something to learn from every opportunity, good and bad. Looking back on my college years, I am so thankful I took part in so many different experiences. Say yes to joining a club, going on a spring break trip, and attending that basketball game! It can all be very nerve-wracking at first, but you're in the midst of making life-long memories. Savor every moment with the people that matter most!

Have you completed an internship, job, or been involved with a club that has been especially meaningful to you?

One of my favorite things to do is work at a local veterinary hospital as a pet nurse. Each day is an adventure full of learning new hands-on skills, witnessing unique medical cases, and most importantly serving communities in need. A common misconception is that college will be way too busy to have time for a job. While this work-life balance can be challenging at times, it is definitely possible and very rewarding! One of the best ways to gather insight into a potential future career is through first-hand experiences like shadowing or interning.

Tell us about the city of Lexington. What surprised you? What places/people do you like most?

Growing up in Frankfort (30-45 minutes from Lexington), I thought I was familiar with the area. However, I was pleasantly surprised at just how many things there are here! This past year, I have loved exploring different local coffee shops to study or do homework. I highly encourage trying out local restaurants, taking a day trip to Keeneland, and getting tickets to a fun event at Rupp Arena just down the road!
